Dansville Airport is located in the picturesque town of Dansville NY in the south-western part of the Finger Lakes Region of the state. Directions And Map For Arrival By Ground Directions And Map For Arrival By Airplane Why Dansville, NY??? There are many reasons why the FLSC is based here.... The soaring condition are very favorable. Dansville sets in a valley. When the wind is from the west, it often generates nice ridge lift on the hill just to the east of the airport that is about 1000 feet above the valley floor. The valley to the north is all farmland, a good source of thermal activity. In addition, occasionally the hills to the west will trigger a wave over the field, allowing pilots to work their way from the ridge into the wave. Our current field record for altitude is something like 14,000 ft. The Airport is ideal for operations. There is plenty of landing space on the grass runways (which gliders prefer) that are adjacent to the hard runways used by power planes. The airport is outside of the busy Class C airspace that surrounds both the Rochester and Buffalo airports. The town and airport are located right next to I-390. This makes the site convienent for our members that come from Rochester, Buffalo, the Southern Tier of New York and even the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Being next to an Interstate Highway, there are may services and ammenities for our member and guests, such as restaurants, motels and service stations. Dansville is the site of the New York Balloon Festival in late August/Early September. The FLSC does not generally provide glider rides to the Public. However, this has been the exception in recent years as the club ceases normal operations that weekend and provides rides in connection with the Festival. This has been a great source of revenue to help keep our membership dues low and often is the opportunity that one or two of the many riders need to experience the thrill fo soaring.... so that they will come back to join the club.  The merchants, airport personal and local government groups have been very supportive of the Club. Several of those business are active sponsors, providing some financial contributions to FLSC. We encourage our members and guests to use the services and products of these local sponsors.
